SPEAKER_02

Hey everyone, I'm Alexander Tabor. I'm an eleventh grader, and we're here to do another episode of the Grit Podcast. And for today's fun question, we're gonna be if you could choose a cartoon character to be your head coach of your Nike team, who would it be? And for me, I would choose Darling Charming from Ever After High because she's super fit and athletic, and you know I'd listen to everything she says, so you know, right? Right, right, yeah, like charming, bro. Um, and who wants to go next?

SPEAKER_01

Sage Hugo. Whoa, okay. I still haven't figured mine out yet, but um, my name is Sage by Chapel High School. I'm in 11th grade, and I don't really see. I want to say Olaf, but I just want him to support me. Like, I don't know if he'd be a good coach. That's my one thing.

SPEAKER_02

I can see Olaf. I can see Olaf. Yeah, yeah, yeah. He'd be cracking jokes though. Like, if someone fell on the race course, that man would be like making a whole comedy show out of it.

SPEAKER_01

You don't want to like remove his arm in like the movie and like go around. He would give you a helping hand.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly, exactly. You'd like to stick it in your jersey pocket.

SPEAKER_01

He will like move all the rocks out of my way as I go.

SPEAKER_02

No, he's someone else to move the rocks. There you go. Alright. I'm happy. I am on Southern Way Trailhawks. And if I could choose one cartoon character to be my head coach, I would choose Mr. Peabody from Mr. Peabody and Sherman. Wow, okay. And I love that cartoon. I love that movie so much. Because he's he's just the best. He's the coach. He's really smart. He's so smart. But what a really smart dog make a good head coach. Absolutely. If Olaf can be what can he not do? Like you know. Okay. Joining us today, we have a special guest. Would you like to introduce yourself?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm Bryn. I'm from North Buncombe High School, and I'm in ninth grade, and I'm on a student leadership council. My if I could pick one cartoon character that could be a head coach, it'd probably be Lightning McQueen because I feel like he knows the race and he would give you like good racing tips.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah, yeah, absolutely. I feel like anybody from the Cars movie in general would be uh top tier because you have the you have his coach in the first place, which I feel I could make a great head coach, you got Tomator. We talked about this earlier. Tomator supply support, you know? And it didn't have like the cars movie. Yeah, wait, what is the newest cars movie? Is it like three or like two? I thought it was four. Is it four? Or is he like he becomes the like person? Isn't he old? He gets old and like he becomes like he turns blue. Yeah, well, cars too is like my underrated favorite. Oh, yeah, the one with the spy one. Wait, I actually like that one. People hate on that one. People hate on it all the time, but also that's me with the Emperor's New Groove 2. Like, oh yeah, yes, some people are like, oh, it's such a bad sequel. Y'all don't know, y'all don't get it. It's peak. Yeah, well, that's not relevant to the podcast at all. But yeah, would you like to give us a recent recap of Grit News Sage?

SPEAKER_01

Yes, I can. Okay, we had not just finished, but we have finished the Dark Mountain race weekend with an amazing talk with Caroline Washam, along with Skills Clinton organized by Ada Watson, Ann Neil, and Vivian Myers. We also had a race weekend last weekend at Rock Hill for Danville with the theme of heavy metal pedal. We had a photo shoot that went out really well. I have a photo with Lighty on my wall right now, and we had a lot of girls coming in and out taking some photos with us, so that was really good.

SPEAKER_02

It was super awesome to be back back at Dark Mountain again. Like being back on the course, getting to ride it again, which was so much fun, especially because it's been so long. Like the last time we were at Dark Mountain was when I was in eighth grade, and we were there twice that season. I I generally missed that course so much. Like it was not my best race position-wise, but I had so much fun just like hitting the downhills, and of course, that the long uphill is like super duper rewarding. So I I love that course a lot. It's one of my favorites, so it was really nice to be back there after so long as well. So I didn't get to go to Rock Hill though, but I heard it was an interesting course. Any thoughts, very dry.

SPEAKER_01

Uh very wet. Well, okay, so the day that I went. I only went Saturday, but the day I went, there had been no rain for like a week or like not even a week, probably like two weeks, and it was really dry. Like your tire was skidding out of everything, and like you had a sharp fear of like shooting off the trail because it was so dry. But it rained really hard when I left, so I guess it got really muddy because all of the dry dirt like mixed up got uh got really muddy.

SPEAKER_02

Ren, did you race?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I did race. Okay, tell us about it. In my second lap, it was so slick I couldn't stay on my bike to like save my life. I fell a couple times, but it was so slick.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, dang. That that sounds like my worst nightmare. I I would rather ride like the most dry sandy trail ever than do something that's slick because I just the con slipping out really scares me. Like I rode, I rode a while ago, it was pretty dry, and it didn't really bother me, even though I did fall, fall, fell, not fall. So I feel like that's just like my opinion. But would you go back, Bryn, for another race?

SPEAKER_00

I feel like if the conditions were better, maybe, but I feel like I did not have a lot of fun because it was so slick. Yeah, like I just couldn't stay on my bike, and it was just kind of like defeating.

SPEAKER_02

Well, we shall see if we go back. Who knows? We'll see you next season. Yeah. Um, so when for those who don't know or may not know, what is Student Leadership Council?

SPEAKER_00

Student leadership councils, like an ambassador organization. We were helping plan like fundraiser activities. So if you guys have been to like the Bike Jeopardy, what else do we do? We did Foot Down, we did limbo, so so we help organize those events.

SPEAKER_02

Awesome. And you want to tell us how long student leadership requent leadership council has been around for?

SPEAKER_00

Um, this is our first season doing it, so that's exciting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. How does it feel to be part of like the first and odd girl council?

SPEAKER_00

It's really exciting, especially because we get to like figure it out and like define what student leadership council is.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I don't know if you know like the exact number for this, but how many people are a part of it?

SPEAKER_00

There's six student athletes, and then Shell and Sam help run it.

SPEAKER_01

Very nice.

SPEAKER_02

And I know you mentioned like kind of what you guys do, but like what's your like kind of like goals for what you want to achieve with student leadership capital?

SPEAKER_00

Our goal is to provide leadership opportunities to the student athletes of NYCA. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's about all I got. I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_02

And that's really important when it comes to especially like thinking about how building the student leadership is super important, a big part of it. And kind of what do you feel like is the most important part of being a part of student leadership council or like a specific project?

SPEAKER_00

I feel like the most important part is helping like the people of like Shell and all the like leaders of Nica, like help them get student leadership input and more of having like student athlete leadership so they know how to like make the courses better for the student athletes or whatnot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that's really nice because you have like some input in. And then, so how did you like end up getting involved in this?

SPEAKER_00

My mom saw the Instagram post for like student leadership council, and she's like, You should do this. And I was like, Okay, sure. So I ended up signing up.

SPEAKER_01

Is it a similar way for like others to get involved as well?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I think applications open for all student ambassador projects October 1st. So you can go apply and hopefully get in.

SPEAKER_02

And you mentioned this is the first year having student leadership council. What do you think? Like, this is pretty like a unique thing now. It's like new. How do you think it is like helpful and like what makes it unique?

SPEAKER_00

It's unique because it helps we can help plan fundraising events and make like a events more enjoyable for student athletes.

SPEAKER_02

And then I kind of want to like like why do you think it was important that it was like created and like because like this is its first year, and like how do you feel like you've made like a big impact?

SPEAKER_00

We made a big impact, like mostly we've not done a whole lot so far, so it's kind of hard to go more in depth, but planning the fundraising events has been really fun for us, and I know that like that takes it off of somebody else's plate, which I think is really helpful, and it's just nice to have more student athlete representation and like with all the yeah, yeah, staff.

SPEAKER_02

There you go. And then to add on to that, what what do you want everyone to know about the student leadership council?

SPEAKER_00

I just want everyone to know that it's like it's a fun time. Like I've I've enjoyed like making friends and knowing more people throughout the whole NYCA organization. And it's not like don't like shy away because it's like more work, it's not that much more work, and it's just really exciting to have a voice in Nica.

SPEAKER_01

That's really important. And then so you did you said that you did like foot down and limbo this season, but do you have like any different plans for next season?

SPEAKER_00

We don't have any plans so far that I know of, at least.

SPEAKER_02

Do you yourself have any personal goals like coming up in upcoming seasons with being involved?

SPEAKER_00

I want to be able to like make an impact on Nika and make sure that like it can be more enjoyable for people for the student athletes and get more people involved in Nika, especially girls. Like, I would love to see a lot more girl racers.

SPEAKER_02

And I'm just curious, you talk about like all these fundraising events. What were some of the events that you did?

SPEAKER_00

We did we did foot down, and then I think the next first we did limbo, and then we did bike jeopardy at the most recent one, which is we put a bike part in a box and they had to feel what the bike part was. That went surprisingly well. I was expecting it to be a lot harder, but I just don't think I know my bike parts that well.

SPEAKER_02

And how do you guys like plan these?

SPEAKER_00

We have a Zoom call once a month and we like plan our out ideas, and on Saturday we've got a meeting, we have meetings that will get it all together and make sure that we have it all figured out.

SPEAKER_02

So you guys plan all the event like from the planning to the like activity and like all that? That's pretty cool. So is there anything else that we would like to add or that you have to say about your time in student leadership council or that you want people to know more about?

SPEAKER_00

I would like more people to get involved. I think it could be a really big thing, and it could be a lot more like with more people. We could be able to do more projects and stuff. So I just like get involved if you can.

SPEAKER_01

For anybody that would be listening to this, like could they email or like message somebody on anything to be able to like get their name in something before you start releasing some information about it later on?

SPEAKER_00

Um not that I know of.

SPEAKER_02

I don't think a quick question what's one thing you wish you would have known before joining the student leadership council?

SPEAKER_00

I don't really know. I feel like I knew most of it. Like we started, we were just kind of figuring it out like throughout. So it's not like it's not that I didn't know, it was like mostly we were planning it because it was like our first year, so it was like still trying to figure it out and all.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, it's super cool that you got to like kind of like help like start and like basically like form what this is gonna be like and like get to do the like first things that you guys are doing this year. That's really cool.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's very exciting.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And for anyone who is interested in student leadership with Nica, those applications open October 1st, like Brynn mentioned, and that is for Student Leadership Council and also for good ambassadors. So if you're looking to get involved in stuff like this, to have a leadership role, have your help out in leadership and with the amazing Nica community, yeah. Check out those applications October 1st. And then we have our last race coming up two weekends, or not this weekend, but the next weekend. Um that would be May 9th through 10th in Danville. And that theme is decade of dirt, I believe.

SPEAKER_01

Um, what no, it's just decade of dirt is kind of a funny theme to me.

SPEAKER_02

I know the thing of dirt. Sage, you're gonna come with decades of dirt. Yeah, in your bag, on your bike, picking it up from outside and just rub it all over me. All over me. I'm pretty sure my bike shoes have decades of dirt built up. Loki, she's I don't know how often I they don't get cleaned enough. Like I remember when we first got those bike shoes, they were so sparkly. They are not sparkly anymore, Hadley. But you know, it's it's it's the memories that you know, wear and tear and tear, yeah, is good. That means they're used, you know. But yeah, I'm super excited to see everyone at Danville again. And you know, it's kind of sad because I'm seniors old. It'll be my last last race, but it's gonna be a good one. So I'm super excited, and really want to thank you, Hadley, for all your involvement, Ingrit. And also with the podcast, you've been a really key part of like bringing this together, especially when it was you, I and Vivian, and just you know, just thank you for all your involvement, even as you go on to graduate and leave.

SPEAKER_01

Thank you, Hadley. Thank you, Hadley. I love you. Oh, whoa, I ain't gone yet.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's coming up pretty soon. It's an it's next weekend. I only saw you one time this season, so yo, yo. It's okay. It's okay. Yeah, so thank you, and thank you to everyone who is listening. I want to give a huge shout out to Bryn today. Thank you for joining us. You were super awesome, and it's really cool to learn about the student leadership council because even I personally had no idea what it was. But thank you to all of our listeners. Feel free to share uh share the podcast with your friends and your teammates, or let us know if you have any suggestions. We have a link to suggestion to a suggestion form in the link in our Instagram bio, which is at n cticl underscore grit. And thank you, and we'll see y'all next ride. Bye. Thank you.
